A Lifeline for Remote Patients

Imagine living in a rural area with limited access to health care, and facing a condition that affects your ability to eat, speak or interact with others. For countless people in Madagascar, this is a daily reality. The launch of the mobile clinic by Operation Smile in Madagascar means that patients no longer need to endure long and often treacherous journeys to receive the care they deserve.

This innovative mobile clinic is equipped to provide three essential services: nutrition, dental care and psychosocial support. Here’s a closer look at how each service can make a difference:

Nutrition Care: Many patients struggle with malnutrition, which can hinder their eligibility for surgical interventions. Our mobile clinic offers nutritional assessments and tailored interventions to help underweight patients regain their health and prepare for surgery.

Dental Care: Oral health is crucial for overall well-being. The mobile clinic provides vital dental treatments, including extractions and cleaning. For adults with cleft palates, we supply obturators to improve their quality of life.

Psychosocial Support: Navigating the emotional and social challenges of living with a cleft condition can be daunting. Our team identifies the specific struggles faced by patients and their families and provides vital psychosocial support, including compassionate assistance like food items for caregivers.

The Journey Begins

The mobile clinic’s development was made possible by generous donations raised during a charity gala in 2023. From 10–18 June 2024, we conducted a successful test phase, traveling 597 kilometers along the East Coast of Madagascar — from Antananarivo to Toamasina, with stops in Moramanga, Ambatondrazaka and Brickaville. Accompanied by our dedicated staff and volunteers, we reached patients who were eagerly awaiting care.

During this journey, we witnessed firsthand the profound impact of our services. From addressing nutritional needs to providing dental care and psychosocial support, the mobile clinic served as a lifeline for many.

Our mobile clinic will continue to travel regularly, ensuring that we meet the needs of patients across Madagascar and raise awareness about Operation Smile’s mission. We believe that everyone deserves access to quality health care, regardless of their location.
