At Operation Smile, we love seeing the impact of life-changing surgery and comprehensive care for the children we serve. Behind every smile is our unwavering commitment to create access to safe essential surgery around the globe. That’s what — World Patient Safety Day — is all about.

Recognized annually, World Patient Safety Day is an opportunity for increased attention and focus on preventing patient harm, which the World Health Organization has identified as a leading cause of death and injury. For us, it’s also a time to celebrate our strong safety culture.

At Operation Smile, we are proud to set the standard for excellence. Our training and education programs elevate safe surgical standards and strengthen a global network to reach more people earlier in their lives. Our medical quality experts continually explore opportunities to improve care. For instance, in June, they completed an in-depth multi-year analysis of medical events, which led to multiple patient safety enhancements across the organization.

Every member of the Operation Smile family plays an important role when it comes to patient safety. We invite all interested parties to check out new resources available on Operation Smile Academy, including:

  • Medical event reporting best practices
  • How to prevent retained throat pack during surgery
  • Program planning checklist
  • How to prevent accidental extubation
  • How to identify safety concerns that cause surgery cancellation sooner
