Transforming Child Healthcare Advocacy: Insights from Operation Smile and Local Leaders in Africa
Africa faces a critical shortage of medical professionals, with only two doctors and 11 nurses/midwives per 10,000 people. However, Africa’s healthcare sector also holds significant promise, propelled by the collaborative efforts of local leaders, dedicated teams, volunteers, and strategic partners. Together, they are shaping a brighter future for children across the continent.
Operation Smile, alongside local leaders and partners, is bridging this gap in access to essential surgeries and healthcare, starting with cleft surgery and comprehensive care. Through our endeavours in health system strengthening, we aim to establish sustainable healthcare systems that guarantee long-term, quality care for all. Currently, we have approximately 740 local medical volunteers across the continent who devote their time and expertise to delivering the best possible care to patients living with cleft conditions.
By prioritizing education, Operation Smile seeks to build local capacity, recognizing it as the most effective pathway. Through our collaboration in surgical programs with local entities, we facilitate knowledge exchange and innovation, which are crucial for capacity building. Structural barriers are systematically addressed through efforts in health policy, advocacy, and infrastructure enhancement, all aimed at strengthening health systems. Research and innovation serve as guiding forces, informing decision-making processes, comprehending barriers to care, and enhancing program efficacy. Beyond surgical interventions, Operation Smile adopts a holistic patient care approach, encompassing dental, speech, nutrition, and psychological support, thereby fostering full patient rehabilitation and social inclusion.
Partnerships in Africa are integral to our approach, as we work closely with local medical leaders, ministries of health, universities, accrediting bodies, NGOs, and international organisations. Notable partners include COSECSA, CANECSA, AHA, and WFSA, collectively committed to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals. Through strategic partnerships, innovative solutions, and a shared vision for a healthier Africa, we endeavour to make a tangible difference in the lives of our children.
